The Big Apple is New York’s nickname. However, exactly how did the city get this moniker? It all depends on what source you read. One idea is that a New York sports journalist, John J Fitz Gerald in the 1920s, coined it.
Another notion is the name appeared during the Depression of the 1930s and referred to vendors selling apples, a nightspot in Harlem, and a dance called the Big Apple. No matter what the origin, the Big Apple is the goal of travelers who wish to visit the countless attractions that the city has to offer. The issue is deciding what to see. Perhaps the best choice is to select one of the many tours offered.
A well-informed visitor would be wise to obtain one of the New York passes that permits free admission to over 50 city venues and money off on tours. Highlights of the NYC are the traditional sites such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Central Park Zoo, and the Empire State Building, just to name a few.
Another option is to select a tour or tours- by location, by time of day, or by means of tours or those. Here are a few examples. The All around Tour gives the tourists a 2-day chance to ride the buses traveling around Brooklyn and Manhattan, allowing the riders to get on and off the bus at whatever sites they wish to visit. NYC City Sites Night Tours shows off New Yorkâs bright lights and expands during the holidays to take in the seasonal lights of Rockefeller Center and Times Square. A variation is the Shop, Hop and Top NYC bus tour observing the city from a double decker bus.
For a change of pace fly one of several helicopters sightseeing tour soaring over the NYC landmarks of the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty or the Aerial Landmark tours. Ride a cruise ship or ferry boat around the Island of Manhattan. Rent a bike and ride around Central Park.
New York hotels have rooms that can range from moderate to expensive. A hostel can cost up to $50. A budget-priced room with common bathroom might be $100 to $200. A moderate priced hotel with an adequate room, dining, and room would charge from $250 to $350. Instead of staying in the city, to find lodgings on Long Island, in Queens, on Staten island or in New Jersey.
These tours are just the beginning of endless possibilities of what to see and do in New York City. It just takes time and some investigating to decide the highlights that are the most interesting.
